Money Penny Newcastle
There’s a reason why Money Penny Newcastle thrives on the Honeysuckle Strip, and it’s not just because of its happy vibes and harbour views, although those certainly work in their favour. The eclectic retro cocktail bar opened in 2013, and their rotating drinks menu keeps options creative and customers returning. They base their drinks on what’s fresh and fun. The mango daiquiris come in for the summer season only. The cheap and cheerful fresh green apple cocktails are a best seller. They cover all spirit bases with a strong focus on rum, but also vodka and gin. They always feature at least one dark spirit and at least one funky option like Pisco or Cachaca.
One standout never leaves the menu: the passion sour, which is cocktail maker Josie Alder’s favourite. She’s been shaking drinks at Money Penny Newcastle for the last five years and she finds the passion sours are just “so good to drink”, the perfect balance of flavours. The tangy drink goes down so smoothly customers sometimes don’t believe it’s alcoholic, despite the fact that it requires 300 milliliters of 42 Below Vodka. (Give it 20 minutes.)
Most people can shake a shaker, there’s more of a finesse to a stirred drink. You make it leisurely and you enjoy it leisurely.
Josie’s favourite style of drinks are “stirred down”, drinks with no citrus, just booze, sugars and bitters. Most people can shake a shaker, there’s more of a finesse to a stirred drink. You make it leisurely and you enjoy it leisurely.
“You can stand there and watch it dilute; it’s really pretty. It slows things down. I think that’s reflected in the way you enjoy it, you’re not throwing it down because it’s fluffy, you’re enjoying it because it’s sophisticated,” Josie says.
Don’t see your cocktail on the famous menu? They know how to make every single classic from margarita to negroni.
“If we’ve got the ingredients, we will make it for you,” Josie says.
