Skin Cycling

So much to do, so little time. It’s not surprising that beauty takes a backseat. But it doesn’t have to…

Created by certified dermatologist, Dr. Whitney Bowe, skin cycling is about taking things back to basics. Less products, less irritation and less confusion to maximise results. Sound appealing? The routine is as simple as one, two, three.

NIGHT NO. 1: EXFOLIATION

After cleansing, it’s time to kickstart your skin cycling routine. Remove any dead skin cells using an exfoliator that suits your skin type. A gentle chemical exfoliant serum like Lactic Acid, a facial peel, or an AHA exfoliant is preferable to a gritty scrub.

After exfoliating, apply your usual evening moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated throughout the night.

Skin cycling proves that less is more.

NIGHT 2: RETINOIDS

Retinoids are powerful vitamin A derivatives that work wonders in reducing the appearance of fine lines and evening out skin tone. When you first introduce retinoids, they can be a bit irritating.

Retinoids come in different forms, either prescription medications like tretinoin or milder over-the-counter products like retinol.

Before applying retinoids, cleanse your face thoroughly and gently pat it dry. Layer your usual evening moisturiser on top.

Try – Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum, Skinceuticals Retinol 0.5, or The Ordinary Retinol 1%.

NIGHTS NO. 3 AND 4: RECOVERY

Like your body needs rest days, so too does your skin. Nights three and four are about recovery.

After cleansing, reach for creams, balms and serums to hydrate and moisturise.

Look for ingredients such as niacinamide or hyaluronic acid and rich plant oils and butters.

If you’re experiencing any sensitivity or irritation, add more nights for recovery. If your skin is accustomed to using a retinoid, skip one recovery night to intensify your routine.

Try – Olay Niacinamide + Peptide 24 Moisturizer, CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer or Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel.
